Domain safety requires you to take a few extra precautions to keep you and your website in business!

Domain Theft

  • Hijackers will often use identity theft as a way to trick the domain registrar into allowing the hijacker to change the registration information, stealing ownership of the domain.

  • Some hijack cases that aren't settled right away will turn into lengthy lawsuits, which don't always end up as hoped.

  • Once a domain is hacked, anything can be done with it, including changing the actual domain name, and redirecting all traffic from that website.

Hijack Prevention

  • Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) is a protocol designed to use authorization codes as a security measure to prevent unauthorized actions.

  • Most top-level domains (.com, .gov, .us, etc) use EPP to ensure security to your domain.

Trademarks

  • Trademarks are indicators that uniquely identify the source of it's products and/or services to consumers.

  • Protect your logos, company, images etc. with the proper trade marking to prevent infringement.

Watermarking

  • Digital watermarking is a technique which allows an individual to add hidden copyright notices or other verification messages to digital audio, video, or image signals and documents.

  • Visual Watermarks are visible for enhanced copyright protection and can be used to mark materials for ownership.

  • Invisible watermarking can brand your web pages, or other copyrighted material and help prevent unauthorized publication or duplication. Invisible watermarks are otherwise termed Steganography.

Steganography

  • Steganography (or - Stego) is the art and science of writing hidden messages in such a way that no one apart from the sender and intended recipient even realizes there is a hidden message.

    • Often, Steganography uses messages imbedded in graphic images, and the message contained as hidden streams of text within the picture are not discernable from the viewpoint of most computers.

Cryptography

  • By contrast, cryptography obscures the meaning of a message, but it does not conceal the fact that there is a message.

  • Chaffing and winnowing is a cryptographic technique used to achieve confidentiality without using encryption when sending data over an insecure channel
